Amsterdam has to be one of my favourite cities in Europe.
It is full of great culture, lovely architecture and friendly people, what more could you want from a place.
It is obviously a very famous tourist destination for many people for many reasons which vary from the amazing Anne Frank museum (which you unfortunately cannot take any photos inside there), the sex museum, the red-light district, Heineken, canals and of course cannabis coffee shops.
I remember my first visit to the city when my friend Ola and I stepped off the plane into Schipol airport to be greeted by hundreds of extremely tall people darting off to work in the early hours of the morning.
Of course we decided that we would take a train from the airport to the centre of Amsterdam without asking anyone which way was the right direction but we still hoped onto the closest train in sight (definitely wouldn’t suggest this method of transport when travelling as you end up getting very lost and losing alot of money). It wasn’t until half hour later on the train when the train ticket man asked to stamp our tickets that he had told us in dutch:
“U bevind zich op de verkeerde trein en gaan de tegenovergestelde direcction”
Which translates into english as:
“You are on the wrong train and going the wrong direction”
In which of course we didn’t understand in dutch and just nodded happily like we understood.
The friendly train ticket man soon realised that our blank faces suggested that we were english speaking and quickly pointed us in the right direction and which train to get.
After this small hick up on the train we arrived into Amsterdam city train station to a beautiful sunrise which covered the city.
We were lucky to visit the City with one of our close university friends Annabelle who’s family are originally from Amsterdam and she was able to show us the best spots and places to go in Amsterdam.
It is definitely the best way to see a city if you know someone from there as they will take you to the sneaky little places that all the tourists don’t get to see.
I won’t go on too long about this place as I am sure that I will post about it again.
But here are some of my old photos from that trip.
