Woooo Australia Day!!

IMG_6250

Yes there is indeed a bank holiday in Australia called Australia Day….

I had not heard of this until I had arrived here but it could be compared to similar days like St. Patrick’s day or St. George’s day.

It is basically an excuse for everyone to have a day off work.

Australia Day technically marks the anniversary of the arrival of the first fleet on English ships into New South Wales in 1788, and therefore why not have a party!!!

The day consists of a lot of Australian flags and drinking around Sydney.

I thought great… I should get involved in this.

I headed out towards Circular Quay, which is located close to the Sydney Opera House and was meant to be where most of the celebrations were happening.

There was hundreds and hundreds of people there but everyone was in great spirits and the weather was incredible.

There was live music, drinks, free Australian flags, pirate ships and of course croquet (not completely sure why haha).

We then headed over to the Opera Bar where we had a quick drink of Prosecco, whilst I waited for my friend from university to arrive from a different Hostel.

Around 4:00pm we had met up with my friend from uni and we all headed over on the ferry to Manly which takes around 20-30 minutes.

Manly is a beach-side suburb located in north Sydney. It is a great location to stay as it has the small town beach vibe but just a small ferry/bus or train ride into the bit city life in Sydney.

Manly is a great location if you would like to do a spot of surfing and there is also some super cool bars, shops and restaurants around.

Australia day was amazing fun and fortunately for us it was also great weather. We all had a few drinks over in Manly but headed back home relatively early as we were all quite tired at the end of the day.

What did you guys get up to on Australia day??

Hopefully I will be doing something fun next year too (even if I am in the UK for Australia Day)!!
